About us

The College

The College is an affiliation of yoga teachers trained in classical disciplines who aim to bring a traditional discipline back into modern Yoga.

Sri Jani Baker, Principal

BA (Melb) Grad Dip Marketing (CIT) Grad Dip Arts - Social Science- (Monash) Postgrad Dip Health Psychology (La Trobe.)

Trained in the discipline of Yoga by Swami Shankarananda

Trained as Hatha Yoga teacher by Joy Spencer

Trained as Meditation Leader by Ian Gawler

She has been variously Secretary of the Gawler Foundation, Secretary of the Shiva Mediation Centres, and is currently (2002-3) President of the Yoga Teachers Association.

Jani began practising Yoga when she was 16, starting by following the illustrations in a handout in the Women's Weekly, and thereafter finding a yoga class wherever she found herself living. It was not for another 17 years that she found that there was more to Yoga than stretching and bending. She has been practising the full discipline of Yoga, including daily meditation, for the last 20 years.

She has almost completed "Path Through the Yoga Sutras", a commentary on the Yoga Sutras helping students to get the radical shift of experience pointed to by the Sutras, along with exercises to aid comprehension.

Robert Baker, Administrator

BSC (Melb) MBA (Melb) Higher Diploma of Teaching, Work Place Training Certificate

After living in a yogic household for the better part of 30 years, Robert finally succumbed to Yoga and meditation. He practises asana and dhyana on a regular basis, and is studied anatomy at LaTrobe university to assist with the Classical Yoga Teachers program.  Robert also teaches the program in Principles of Teaching and Commercial Principles .

Sally Dawson, Teacher Trainer

Diploma of Classical Yoga from the Australian College of Classical Yoga

Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Technology)

Graduate Diploma in Business Administration

Sally has practised hatha yoga for over seven years and embraces and teaches from a yogic perspective that includes not only the physical, but also the mental and spiritual disciplines of yoga. In teaching Sally draws on her understanding of the human body to help students explore the asanas to their own capacity. She also encourages students to explore meditation and stillness, helping them to understand that the busy mind is what usually gets in the way of the "union" that yoga offers.

Sally runs Waverley Yoga Studio in Glen Waverley, teaching classes in the classical style that are suitable for beginners but also offer dynamic work and stronger poses for those with more experience. She also teaches Parent and Baby Yoga and Antenatal Yoga. Sally's experience also includes teaching for corporate clients, schools and gyms.
